 Popular social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat have become a vital component in our lives. Through these platforms users are able to share and like content, as well as communicate with one another. 

Though Facebook is popular and has relatively easy functions, this social media platform tends to resonate with an older generation of the population. With Facebook, users are able to stay connected and updated with their friends, family and colleagues. On the initial home page, users are able to view content such as news, shared images and status updates in a chronological order. In contrast, the content that is featured on Instagram feed is no longer displayed in a chronological order. With its constantly new added features such as Instagram lives and reels, instagram helps friends and family stay connected mainly through sharing photographs. The users, unlike Facebook appear to be a younger audience with content that tends to be more relatable to the newer generations. Scrolling through the instagram, it is noticeable that some instagram posts include content from other platforms such as Pinterest, Tik Tok and Twitter. Instagram has also been a great platform for smaller businesses to market and provide an easy way for users to buy their products through embed links or direct messaging. Twitter, on the other hand, allows people to neatly compact their ideas and thoughts within a few characters. Twitter is a system of microblogging that allows users to quickly get information and educate themselves about various topics. Twitter also shows through the ability to retweet what topics, ideas or thoughts are important for that user. Snapchat is completely different from all three platforms mentioned above. It permits users to personally send pictures or disappearing messages to the people whom they follow. Usually, this platform is reserved for closer friends and family where the content that is shared is on a daily basis. Snapchat gives users unique features to maintain their privacies whether that is by deleting a snapchat once it is opened, deleting messages or creating multiple private stories with the ability to see control who can view it. 


At first glance it may seem that these are all simply social networking websites. However, based on my initial impressions of each platform (by looking at their features and capabilities) is it easy to conclude that they are all unique and needed for different purposes.

  In order to show my creativity using new media I have posted below screenshots of my personalized Pinterest boards for home decoration and hair style inspiration. By using Pinterest, I am able to gather all my inspiration for various sources into one easily accessible platform. I am able to create unique collages of ideas based on my “aesthetic.” In fact, I have the ability to continue adding or even deleting “pins” (posts) as my preferences change. Whenever I want to get some new ideas on how I can decorate my room, for example, I would look up “minimal room decor ideas” in the search function. As a result, I would get an endless page of “pins” by other Pinterest users that relate to the topic I searched up. If I find any posts that I like and want to place it onto my own vision board I would simply “add” the post onto its respective board. On Pinterest I have creative control over my own account. A proposal for a new type of “new media” would be to further enhance the capabilities of the virtual worlds. Currently, a virtual world platform creates a computer simulated environment. However, this new type would create a virtual reality based on the series of digital photographs that users are able to upload onto the platform. For example, a user can upload their personal photographs from their recent hiking trip to Bear Mountain. The technology would then be able to create a simulated environment based on the scanned photographs. In the virtual world, the user has the opportunity to create their own personal avatars and converse with other users using the chat function. There will even be a feature that allows users to initiate video calls with one another using their avatars instead of turning on their cameras.   If hired by Baruch College, I would recommend that new media should be implemented both within and outside the classroom. The first recommendation would be to create a wiki page for all the majors within the 3 schools (Zicklin, Weissman, and Marxe). The wiki page would encompass all the necessary information regarding particular majors such as which classes to enroll in, which minors are compatible with that major, the GPA requirements, etc. There can be individual hyperlinks that direct students to pages that provide information about the major itself, the career opportunities and much more. In addition, the wiki would allow students to collaboratively share their experiences in particular classes, constantly update recent job/internship opportunities available and overall be able to build on each other’s knowledge.
