HW Creativity
New media fosters creativity by giving users the autonomy to create new content, make their own decisions, and guide their own experiences. On social media platforms, such as Snapchat, Pinterest and Instagram users have the ability to post a variety of content in unique ways. For example, two users can upload the same photograph onto their respective instagram stories. However, by incorporating filters, editing apps, gifs, stickers and drawing tools those users actually end up uploading completely different content. Individuals’ ability to customize their posts and stories create endless possibilities and thereby foster creativity. In addition by creating, sharing, liking and reposting content that fits one’s “aesthetic” the user is able to guide their own experience on these social media platforms. Another example where users are able to let their creativity roam free is on Pinterest. On this platform users can find creative ways to build off of others’ ideas, while also providing original content. Users can create a collage of “pins” on a “board” by either uploading their own pictures or collecting the content that others have posted. Essentially, due to the fundamental nature of how Pinterest works, users are able to customize their accounts and explore their creative side.
With the various editing tools and softwares, users have the opportunity to explore their creativity in unique ways. As the article, “Disney Tolerates a Rap Parody of Its Critters. But Why?” by Brooks Barnes states “The postings (called mash-ups), are made by editing together snippets of animated movies and TV shows. The finished products look like music videos in which the cartoon characters do the singing.” This shows how new media fosters creativity by allowing users to take content that already exists and then be able to create something new from it by adding their own twist. There can be endless possibilities of mash-ups, whether it is of music, cartoons or a combination of the two. Companies such as Nickelodeon have not only recognized this creativity, but in fact encourage it. New media stimulates creativity by allowing individuals the opportunity to take creative control and continue creating something new from what has already been created.
