Blog: Advice

If hired by Baruch College, I would recommend that new media should be implemented both within and outside the classroom. The first recommendation would be to create a wiki page for all the majors within the 3 schools (Zicklin, Weissman, and Marxe). The wiki page would encompass all the necessary information regarding particular majors such as which classes to enroll in, which minors are compatible with that major, the GPA requirements, etc. There can be individual hyperlinks that direct students to pages that provide information about the major itself, the career opportunities and much more. In addition, the wiki would allow students to collaboratively share their experiences in particular classes, constantly update recent job/internship opportunities available and overall be able to build on each other’s knowledge. For example, a user can edit the accounting major wiki page to post an update that since the tax laws have changed, the older version of the textbook recommended previously is no longer applicable to the class. Essentially, the wiki would serve as a single tool for students to learn about their majors and connect with others who are in the same position as them. The wiki can easily be updated by authorized students to ensure that the most relevant information is available. Another recommendation would be for the offices at Baruch such as (but not limited to) the Financial Aid, Registrar, and SACC to create blogs to communicate with students on their inquiries and/or concerns. By doing so, those respective offices can become more efficient because they do not have to answer similar questions repeatedly, but rather only need to direct the student to a blog post that answers their question.

Due to the current pandemic and remote learning situation, students are often are tied to zoom meetings for their classes as well as club hours. However, I would recommend that all student organizations adopt one virtual world platform where students are able to virtually interact with each other whether they are in the same club or not. This can attempt to recreate the club hours that use to take place on Thursdays within the club room area. The virtual world can help to facilitate more personal interactions and allow students to be more engaged in club events and/or other club members. This concept can even be adopted by professors for when they hold office hours.

In terms of within the classroom, I would recommend including more social networking platforms into the curriculum so that students are able to learn in a manner that resonates with them more. This would encourage greater participation, engagement and connection with their peers. For example, social media platforms such as Twitter and Instagram can be creatively used within a classroom for group projects or facilitating a discussion on a particular issue. Overall by using social networking sites as a teaching tool students might be more inclined to learn because that method of teaching is more relatable for their generation.

  1. I think the idea of using one platform for all clubs is a great idea. I've seen a lot of clubs already using Discord to communicate to their members, especially with there already being a massive Baruch College server. How do you see Baruch College helping to make this transition? Do you think it would be beneficial for the school to be able to monitor these servers?
