Blog: Next New

A proposal for a new type of “new media” would be to further enhance the capabilities of the virtual worlds. Currently, a virtual world platform creates a computer simulated environment. However, this new type would create a virtual reality based on the series of digital photographs that users are able to upload onto the platform. For example, a user can upload their personal photographs from their recent hiking trip to Bear Mountain. The technology would then be able to create a simulated environment based on the scanned photographs. In the virtual world, the user has the opportunity to create their own personal avatars and converse with other users using the chat function. There will even be a feature that allows users to initiate video calls with one another using their avatars instead of turning on their cameras. Each user’s virtual environment would look different based on how they choose to customize it. At the same time each user will have the option to allow others to join the...

Blog: Wiki So Far

In terms of my contributions on the class wiki so far, I have added a few paragraphs of content and uploaded an image. In addition to adding content directly, I have been gathering research on certain topics on the wiki that I want to further expand on. The page that I have edited is the New Media Food, Beverage and Hospitality Industry under the Amazon Go section. Under that section, I added a more detailed explanation of the technology and experience of the Amazon Go stores by providing specific details. I also edited the existing content by fixing the syntax, grammar and tense. Additionally I have also added an image for the New Media in Social Networking page to demonstrate the adverse impact that social media can have on one’s self image. The image captures how the perfect images on those social networking platforms can drain a person’s belief in themselves.   In terms of further contributions, I am continuing my research on the advantages of new media in education and bu...

Blog: P2P

File sharing is the sharing of digital information such as documents, files, images, video/audio, e-books and computer programs via the internet or network at various access levels. File sharing enables users to transmit data from one computer to another for easy access and efficient use. Popular examples of file sharing are Dropbox and Google Drive which allow users to upload files and be able to access it from other devices and collaborate with their peers. P2P (peer-to-peer) sharing is a controversial method of sharing that is facilitated through a peer to peer software. The artic le “Take Advantage of P2P - not fear it” by Jamie King further stat es that “ P2P file sharing allows users to directly access, download and edit files. Some third-party software facilitates P2P sharing by collecting and segmenting large files into smaller pieces.” An example of a P2P file sharing program is BitTorrent, where users are able to download large files in the manner of minutes. As the article “...

Blog: Advice

If hired by Baruch College, I would recommend that new media should be implemented both within and outside the classroom. The first recommendation would be to create a wiki page for all the majors within the 3 schools (Zicklin, Weissman, and Marxe). The wiki page would encompass all the necessary information regarding particular majors such as which classes to enroll in, which minors are compatible with that major, the GPA requirements, etc. There can be individual hyperlinks that direct students to pages that provide information about the major itself, the career opportunities and much more. In addition, the wiki would allow students to collaboratively share their experiences in particular classes, constantly update recent job/internship opportunities available and overall be able to build on each other’s knowledge. For example, a user can edit the accounting major wiki page to post an update that since the tax laws have changed, the older version of the textbook recommended pre...

Blog: Privacy

New media has led to greater issues pertaining to privacy and confidentiality. With the increased use of these newer technologies, the boundary between what is considered private and public has often become blurred. As noted by the article “Facebook Privacy Is So Confusing Even the Zuckerberg Family Photo Isn't Private” by Rebecca Greenfield even though Randi Zuckerberg had intentionally posted an intimate family gathering photograph on her private Facebook, due to the confusing privacy settings the photo somehow got leaked to the public. This shows that as more personal information becomes available on the internet, there is a greater probability for it to be hacked and/or misused in some manner. There is a saying that goes “once it is on the internet, it is for everyone to see” which speaks to the idea that nothing is really private online anymore. Therefore in order to maintain confidentiality with new media, it is important for users to carefully consider the information that t...

Creativity and New Media

Image
In order to show my creativity using new media I have posted below screenshots of my personalized Pinterest boards for home decoration and hair style inspiration. By using Pinterest, I am able to gather all my inspiration for various sources into one easily accessible platform. I am able to create unique collages of ideas based on my “aesthetic.” In fact, I have the ability to continue adding or even deleting “pins” (posts) as my preferences change. Whenever I want to get some new ideas on how I can decorate my room, for example, I would look up “minimal room decor ideas” in the search function. As a result, I would get an endless page of “pins” by other Pinterest users that relate to the topic I searched up. If I find any posts that I like and want to place it onto my own vision board I would simply “add” the post onto its respective board. On Pinterest I have creative control over my own account. Therefore, I can create “mashups” of ideas that do not normally fit into the stand...

HW Creativity

New media fosters creativity by giving users the autonomy to create new content, make their own decisions, and guide their own experiences. On social media platforms, such as Snapchat, Pinterest and Instagram users have the ability to post a variety of content in unique ways. For example, two users can upload the same photograph onto their respective instagram stories. However, by incorporating filters, editing apps, gifs, stickers and drawing tools those users actually end up uploading completely different content. Individuals’ ability to customize their posts and stories create endless possibilities and thereby foster creativity. In addition by creating, sharing, liking and reposting content that fits one’s “aesthetic” the user is able to guide their own experience on these social media platforms. Another example where users are able to let their creativity roam free is on Pinterest. On this platform users can find creative ways to build off of others’ ideas, while also providing or...
